Summer always goes by quickly and before you know it school is back in session. For those with Kindergartners this can be an exciting time. How do you know if your child is ready for their Kindergarten year? Here are a few skills that are indicators of your child’s readiness.
-Uses words to express wants/needs.
-Understands 2-step directions.
-Recites the alphabet.
-Recognizes and tries to write their own name.
-Counts from 1 to 10.
-Recognizes basic shapes and copies basic shapes.
-Names colors.
-Independence in personal care (e.g. toileting, dressing, hand washing).
-Knows name and age.
-Separates from caregiver.
-Pays attention for 5 minutes.
-Completes a simple puzzle.
Be mindful that kids develop skills at different rates and may show strength in some areas and weaknesses in other areas. If you are concerned that your child is unprepared for the Kindergarten year speak with your preschool teacher or physician to determine what you can do to better prepare them for the upcoming school year.
